Statement by SJUASA Executive Committee on anti-Black Racism Protests
The spectrum of violence against racially minoritized groups is a persisting
reality that many of our colleagues and students are forced to navigate on a
daily basis. The lived experience of those affected by structural racism and
racial violence stands in stark contrast to values that Canadian social
institutions, including universities, purport to uphold: anti-racism, human
rights, dignity, and equity. We acknowledge that academia is not immune to these systems of
oppression and violence. As such, we need to do better for our students,
our colleagues, and our community. Our attention to the issue of racism
and its structural violence needs to be consistent and ongoing. The
St. Jerome’s University Academic Staff Association is committed to the
goals of equity, diversity and inclusion. We commit ourselves as educators
and researchers to challenge institutional racism that perpetuates
inequality in our practices, curriculum, departments, administrative units,
and classrooms. We will connect this work to the broader struggle for
social justice in our communities. The ASA Executive also commits to reviewing its policies, practices, and structures to identify and change those that perpetuate inequality and
inequity. The ASA Executive encourages ASA Members to read the statements by the
Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) and the
Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT). The SJUASA is a
member of both associations.

The St. Jerome’s University Academic Staff Association (SJU ASA) is the certified bargaining agent for all faculty and professional librarians at St. Jerome’s University, a public Roman Catholic university federated with the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario. It is an independent, democratically-run labour union run for and by its members. It also serves as the faculty association for all academic staff at SJU.
The SJU ASA is committed to promoting the welfare of the academic staff of the University, keeping in mind the good of the University as a whole.
In pursuit of this goal, the SJU ASA
- bargains collectively on behalf of academic staff at the University,
- protects academic freedom while advancing teaching, research, and other pursuits of the academic staff,
- promotes collegial governance, and
- safeguards the academic integrity of the University
It works cooperatively with all external agencies, including the SJU administration and Board of Governors, who share our goal of making St. Jerome’s a better place to work, learn, and serve one’s community.
